Reconciliation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) – An Introduction

Pearl Ellis
BACP accredited Counsellor / Psychotherapist

I have 18+years’ experience working as an integrative therapist with Adults & Adolescents. During my career I have trained in several therapeutic approaches. My work has often led me into working with the traumatised clients. Working with veterans, childhood abuse, sexual assault and one of the most challenging projects I was involved in was the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry. Clients’ expressed feelings of vulnerability, emotional/psychological pain, physical and emotional trauma with symptoms of PTSD. However, as a therapist I have the privilege of sharing in people’s life stories, often at times when they are at their lowest point.

I was recently involved with Kings College and Inspire in trialing a new therapeutic approach Reconciliation of Traumatic Memories (RTM), within the veteran community. This involved delivering RTM to clients who have experienced trauma and suffering from PTSD. Dr Lisa de Rijk delivered the training and supervision during the delivery of RTM (the results will be published later this year). Following this in April 22 I had the privilege to be part of a team led by Lisa in training Ukrainian psychotherapists/psychologists and counsellors in RTM. Following their training the Ukrainian therapists are actively delivering RTM in their war-torn country.

One of my favourite quotes by Charlie Mackesy;

“What is the bravest thing you have ever said?” asked the boy
“Help” replied the horse.
